How to look like a dog on the Internet

Let's move on from the FUD of my previous post and find some solutions. Let's start stating the worst case scenarios.

For Internet Service Provider:

  1. Assume they log all your Internet usage, possibly including complete IP packets (i.e., full HTTP request and response headers and bodies)
  2. Assume they know your physical location
  3. Assume they know all your email addresses
  4. Assume they will surrender log files to law enforcement agencies
For web sites:
  1. Assume they log all your activities, possibly including complete IP packets (i.e., full HTTP request and response headers and bodies)
  2. Assume they can locate your physical location
  3. Assume they will surrender log files to law enforcement agencies

To protect yourself from your ISP, and also avoid geolocation by web sites, you can use an encrypting anonymizer. A very promising, and free, project is TOR, although it is currently really slow and not foolproof either, if not used properly.

Can you protect your privacy with remote web sites? Not really, so, if you don't trust a web site, don't use it! And if you really need to, access it through an anonymizer and mind what you do and which information you intentionally disclose. Remember, on the Internet, once it's gone, it's gone forever. After all, tomorrow is another day.
